Finance Ministry’s tax chief accused for illegal cancellation of fines valued at 15 million euro!
The Finance Ministry official in charge of tax and customs affairs, Yiannis Kapeleris, resigned on Monday following pressure from Finance Minister Evangelo Venizelo.
Kapeleris is accused of issuing an order to cancel the collection of more than 15 million euros in fines relating to illegal fuel trade from over 3,500 gas stations.
According to the deputy public prosecutor Spyro Mouzakiti, who conducted the investigation, the amount of damage is at least 15 million euros:
"If we take into account the critical conditions for society and the state, the loss is maximized." said Mr. Mouzakitis.
The offense was committed against state property with the aggravating circumstance of very great value under law 1608/50 on abusers of the state.
However, the association representing gas station owners has defended Mr.Kapeleri by saying that the penalties occurred due to a technical error of the centralized electronic system and not from illegal trading...
